About TENS and EMS

The use of electric current to stimulate the nerves for pain relief has been around for decades and it is widely used for therapeutic purposes by medical professionals. Two of the methods you might have heard frequently are TENS and EMS.

TENS

TENS stands for Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation. It is used by delivering stimulating pulses across the surface of the skin and along the nerve strands. The stimulating pulses help to relieve pain by preventing pain signals from reaching the brain. It also helps stimulate your body to produce higher levels of Endorphins (the natural painkiller in your body).

EMS

EMS stands for Electrical Muscle Stimulation. It is used effectively to prevent or reduce muscle atrophy which commonly occurs after injuries or surgeries. EMS also helps by increasing blood flow to muscles, the range of motion, muscle strength, as well as enhancing muscle endurance. It also helps to relieve muscle related pain, such as spastic muscle, sore muscle, and tight muscles.

Both methods are commonly used in Physical Therapy and have been proven to be an effective pain therapy option to help ease the effects of acute or chronic pain.
